Late 18th-century French pamphlets on the monarchy and Louis XVI, 1732-1789 (bulk 1771-1789).

Essays, laws, speeches, decrees, minutes of meetings, poems, satires, fiction, songs, fictitious dialogues, and an acrostic concerning the monarchy, including many items by, to or about King Louis XVI. Topics include the king's rights and powers, the relation of France's Parlements to the monarchy, the king's role in dealing with proposals for reform of the tax system and other matters of public finance, Catholicism in its political aspect, and the convocation of the Estates General in 1789. Included are speeches given by Louis XVI and his finance minister, Charles Alexandre de Calonne, in the Assembly of Notables in 1787, as well as appeals to the king from members of the clergy, nobility, and Third Estate concerning their privileges and representation.
